Telecel, a founding member of Forum Portugal Global

Telecel - Personal Communications is the leading private operator in cellular mobile telecommunications in Portugal. It was created after the government opened the sector to private initiative in 1990, and included several partners from Portugal and abroad (AirTouch and LCC EuroFon). It began operating one year after bidding for the license along with six other consortia in October 1991. It was one of the first operators in the world to use the GSM system. The client base has grown from 40,000 at end-1993 to 229,000 at mid-1996, that is over one half of the market.

Telecel is represented by António Carrapatoso, who was elected member of the Audit Committee of FPG. A native of Lisbon, he graduated from the Catholic University of Portugal where he tought from 1980 to 1988. He holds an MBA from Nova University and the Wharton School. He worked at Hoechst Portuguesa from 1981 to 1988, when he became member of the executive board of Quimigal.

He also chaired the board of Sonadel, Unisol, Uniclar, Nutasa-CUF Sanders and Colgate Palmolive Portuguesa and then Esti a company in the Espirito Santo group, which is also a shareholder of Telecel. He has served as President of the Executive Board since January 1992.
